What are the research-backed benefits of HT?

Horticultural Therapy (HT) builds on the Biophilia theory, which recognizes that humans are naturally drawn to nature and benefit physically, mentally, and emotionally from this connection (Wilson, 1984).

Research has shown that HT can improve overall well-being, support targeted health outcomes, and foster personal growth. For example, ‘greening’ hospital spaces can reduce functional decline, and HT can enhance self-identity in women.

Key benefits include:

  • Mental & emotional well-being:
Reduces anxiety, depression, agitation, and apathy; enhances self-identity and emotional intelligence
  • Cognitive & creative engagement:
Supports attention restoration, problem-solving, creativity, and cognitive function across ages
  • Physical health:
Improves flexibility, endurance, and gentle physical activity
  • Social & behavioural outcomes:
Encourages social connection, sustainable behaviours, and skill development

We gather on the traditional lands of the Attiwandaronk (Neutral) peoples, within the Haldimand Tract of the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations of the Grand River), and in kinship with Anishinaabe relatives, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
With gratitude, we honour their enduring care of waters, earth, and all relations.
Their ancient knowledges of tending land, gardening, and plant healing predate and surpass modern monetized practices—we commit to listening, reconciling, and supporting as grateful guests and allies.
